Belfast Cathedral recently tackled the challenging task of selecting new cathedral chairs to replace all their old seating.
Any chair would need to balance various priorities from different user groups. It was essential to be suitable for weekly worship in that the congregation would find sufficiently comfortable, but which the Vergers would find suitably stackable.
As is advisable they requested several sample chairs from more than one supplier. After many meetings and much testing, it was two chairs from Alpha Furniture that were front runners.
The Dean liked one of the two chairs in particular, but wanted a hybrid version of it if possible with upholstered seat and wooden back.
Alpha set about combining two designs to create the LDH, or the ‘Belfast Chair’ as it has been named.
A bespoke sample was produced, and was passed by the Cathedral board. 200 LDH chair were delivered some weeks later.
UK designed and manufactured, they have delighted the cathedral congregation and are set to serve this generation and the next.
The chair stacks 8 high, with no foam crush and features a bespoke ‘hassock pin’ – for hanging the hand-made hassocks already in use at the Cathedral. The chair can also be manufactured with a cross cut-out in the backrest; with a variety of wood stains to choose from for the frame and back finish. Naturally there are even more choices of upholstery type and colour.
Alpha Furniture pride ourselves in designing products that provide our market with the specific features they require.
To date we have designed among other items, the Jacob chair, the OD1 stacking dolley, book holders for cathedral chairs, slip-on elasticated pockets, hinged book shelves, and even a mug shelf – for coffee mugs (without compromising stacking ability).
